Thinking about studying abroad? Here’s what you need to know

We’ve heard of universities such as Harvard, Yale, Columbia, UCLA and more; but have you ever thought about actually studying abroad?

Why is it better than studying in Australia?

The culture in Australian universities compared to UK and US colleges is very different. The reasons people choose to study internationally also varies. Not only does international study give you the opportunity to be independent and travel the world, but the level of education can also be superior.

Studies show that those who obtain a bachelor’s degree in the US rather than Australia have higher employment rates with higher wages. There are also endless athletic opportunities.

Where are the best places to study?

The main two places that you can study abroad in the English-speaking world. These are the US and the UK. US colleges are more flexible and will even let you start freshman year without having decided your major while UK universities are more similar to the Australian structure by requiring you to apply for a specific course. Another major difference is the time it takes to complete your undergraduate (bachelor) degree.

In the US, it takes 4 years and in the UK it takes 3 years. If you wish to pursue medicine and law, you are not required to complete an Undergraduate, however, in the US it is required. They both have great educational facilities!

What if I can’t afford it?

It is important to not look at the ‘sticker price’ of a university, especially in the US. There are many forms of financial aid, even available to international students, that will reduce that price substantially. The forms of financial aid can be seen below.

Loan – need to be paid back

Grants – based on your financial situation and does not need to be given back

Scholarships – Usually depends on athletic or academic ability. Does not need to be given back

Going onto financial aid net calculators can provide a guideline on what you may have to pay.

What else do I need to do to prepare?

Preparing for the SATs is a major part of the process. Khan Academy is great place to start

Research individual universities and become familiar with their expectations and requirements.
